The Trouble with Joe Biden

Lacking Experience?

No! Not Joe Biden, he’s got more experience than math has numbers. It’s his running mate, who even he has expressed concerns about.

Joe Biden has been on record stating that Barack Obama doesn’t have the experience necessary to become the President. With his most recent ad John McCain clearly will begin to make this a focal point of the campaign. Obama is going to have to work unbelievably hard to dispel this belief that apparently even his running mate agreed with McCain on this one.

Now one could argue that Biden made the statement trying to defeat Obama in a heated primary, that’s certainly true…but he still made the statement. Furthermore, he’s also been quote saying that he’d be honored to run against or with John McCain and that it would be good for the country. Whoops!

It’s really a catch-22 for Biden, if he admits he was wrong, he a man of poor judgment. However, if he stands by his statement, then McCain gets to take Obama to the cleaners.

An Agent of Change?

As I’ve written about just recently, Obama’s Marketing Plan seems to focus on the messages of hope and change. I struggle with the question of how exactly does a who has been in the senate for nearly 36 years meet that tab?

Obama has been attacking McCain for being in the Senate for 26 years and taking that long to notice it’s broken. Well Barack, your guy has had nearly 36 years. I think that’s longer, but maybe I shouldn’t be going to business school.

I can hear the speech now, “Senator Joe Biden has been an agent of change for nearly 36 years in the United State Senate.” Oh really, then why has it been broken for 26 years while John McCain has been in the Senate? Could you say the same thing about McCain, that he’s an agent of change? So don’t even try to tell me that Biden has been an agent of change or more so than McCain, I won’t believe it.

I’m struggling with this pick because it seems to take on the of strongest things Obama had going for him. The campaign was doing an excellent job of painting McCain as ready to have a third George Bush term. While I fundamentally disagree with that charge, it was clearly working.

How will they play this out?

While they can’t solve the second problem, the first will sound something like this, “At the time, I said ‘he can be ready.’ I wanted to see something more from Senator Obama, I have. Barack Obama is ready, he has proven he is prepared to lead this country.” But the question is…Will the country buy that answer?

I am extremely interested in learning how the Obama camp plays these two troublesome issues. They both likely be potential killers to the Obama-Biden ticket.

I know one thing for sure, the PR Department at the Obama campaign just got bigger because it’s going to need to churn out some serious “election speak” with regards to Joe Biden.
